Role Overview
- We are seeking an experienced Python / Full-Stack Developer to join the Equity Derivatives Technology team and support the development and enhancement of Stark, an internal platform supporting the Quantitative Investment Strategies (QIS) business. The successful candidate will design, build, enhance, and support application components across the Web UI, Python service, data-processing, database, and external-integration layers.
- The role is focused on software engineering around established business and quantitative logic. The developer will not be responsible for creating pricing models, performing quantitative research, or defining core QIS calculation methodologies. The developer must nevertheless be comfortable working with financial and market data and collaborating with Quants, business users, and technology teams.
Key Responsibilities
- Python Application Engineering
- Design, develop, enhance, and maintain production-quality Python applications and services.
- Create modular, reusable, testable components and improve the structure of an established codebase.
- Refactor and modernize legacy scripts and applications to improve maintainability, scalability, performance, and operational resilience.
- Participate in technical design, code reviews, automated testing, release activities, and production troubleshooting.
- Web UI and Full-Stack Development
- Design, build, and maintain Web UI components used by front-office, business, and technology users.
- Develop interactive workflows for data visualization, process initiation, operational monitoring, exception management, and user-driven actions.
- Integrate Web UI components with Python backend services, APIs, databases, and application workflows.
- Enhance Python-based web applications using frameworks such as Streamlit, Quart, FastAPI, or Flask, as applicable.
- Apply sound UI engineering practices for usability, validation, security, maintainability, and responsive performance.
- System and Data Integration
- Design and develop integration components that retrieve source data from internal applications and third-party providers.
- Build and consume REST APIs, GraphQL APIs, database interfaces, file-based feeds, and messaging or event-driven interfaces.
- Implement data validation, normalization, transformation, reconciliation, caching, retry, timeout, idempotency, and error-handling controls.
- Integrate with market and reference data platforms such as Bloomberg, and enterprise systems such as Murex, where applicable.
- Work with upstream and downstream owners to define interface contracts, diagnose data-quality issues, and manage integration changes.
- Database, Data Processing, and Scheduling
- Develop efficient data-access and transformation components using SQL, Python, Pandas, and appropriate database libraries.
- Work with relational and time-series data platforms such as PostgreSQL, SQL Server, QuestDB, or equivalent technologies.
- Support batch and scheduled processing, including dependency management, restartability, auditability, and operational controls.
- Diagnose failed jobs, stale or missing data, reconciliation breaks, and upstream/downstream processing issues.
- Production Support and Engineering Quality
- Provide development support for business-critical production applications.
- Improve logging, monitoring, observability, exception handling, alerting, performance, and resiliency.
- Build unit, integration, API, UI, and regression tests and support reliable automated deployments.
- Contribute to Git-based development, CI/CD, release management, configuration management, and environment promotion processes.
- Produce clear technical documentation, runbooks, interface specifications, and support procedures.
Required Qualifications
- Approximately 3+ years of professional software development experience, with substantial recent hands-on Python development.
- Strong Python, object-oriented design, application architecture, package/module design, and software engineering fundamentals.
- Proven experience developing and supporting production-grade Python applications and services.
- Hands-on experience building Web applications and Web UI components connected to backend services.
- Strong API and system-integration experience, including REST and enterprise data interfaces.
- Strong SQL, database integration, and data-processing experience; practical experience with Pandas or equivalent libraries.
- Experience maintaining and enhancing large, existing codebases, including debugging unfamiliar components.
- Strong automated testing experience, preferably with pytest, including effective mocking and integration testing.
- Experience with Git, CI/CD, Linux and/or Windows server environments, and production release processes.
- Demonstrated ability to troubleshoot application, data, integration, performance, and scheduled-job failures.
- Clear communication skills and the ability to work with business users, Quants, support teams, infrastructure teams, and application owners.
- Python web frameworks such as Streamlit, Quart, FastAPI, or Flask.
- Modern front-end development using React, JavaScript or TypeScript, HTML, and CSS.
- PostgreSQL, SQL Server, QuestDB, Xenomorph TimeScape, or other time-series/data platforms.
- Bloomberg, Refinitiv, Murex, or comparable market-data and capital-markets system integration.
- Enterprise scheduling tools such as Tidal and messaging technologies such as Kafka or ActiveMQ.
- GitLab CI/CD, containerization, automated deployment, and modern observability tooling.
- Financial-services or capital-markets technology experience, ideally Equity Derivatives, structured products, QIS, or market data.
Recruiter Screening Guidance
- Prioritize candidates with recent, substantial hands-on Python coding experience rather than architecture-only or management-heavy profiles.
- Ask candidates to describe a production integration they built, including authentication, schema handling, validation, retries, timeouts, reconciliation, monitoring, and support.
- Confirm that the candidate has built user-facing Web UI functionality and can explain how the UI interacted with Python services and databases.
- Look for experience owning production issues from diagnosis through permanent remediation.
- Do not require quantitative model-development experience. Capital-markets domain knowledge is beneficial, but strong engineering ability is the primary selection criterion.
